How do you choose the right length of lunge whip?
In lunging, the whip acts as a natural extension of your arm. Its main role is not to force the horse, but to show the direction clearly, support the impulsion and frame the hindquarters, without the handler needing to move around much in the centre of the circle. The overall length affects both how precise you can be and how comfortable it feels to use.
Two main lengths are generally available, depending on how you work:
- 160 cm: this length is very easy to handle. It suits smaller circles, close work and indoor spaces, where low ceilings and nearby walls call for a compact whip.
- 180 cm: this longer format gives you a comfortable reach, so you can keep a safe distance and still reach the right spot without stretching or throwing your upper body off balance.
Fixed, detachable or telescopic: which lunge whip should you choose?
Transporting and storing a lunge whip can be awkward at the yard or when travelling to shows. Depending on how you organise things, the construction of the shaft matters:
- One-piece rigid models: classic and robust, they transmit movement directly and consistently with no play in the shaft.
- Detachable and two-piece models: made in two parts that screw or slot together, they are easy to store in a show trunk, a grooming bag or a car boot. Our range includes the WHIP & GO detachable lunge whip, the WHIP & GO “Tourillon” detachable lunge whip and the two-piece versions from TdeT and QHP.
- Telescopic models: very compact when closed, a telescopic lunge whip extends in one movement when you are ready to work. The WHIP & GO "Carbone" telescopic lunge whip combines compactness with light weight for working on the move.
Which materials and handles are the most comfortable to use?
A good grip helps prevent tired muscles over repeated training sessions. The weight and flexibility of the shaft and the grip of the handle determine how finely you can adjust your signals:
- Shaft materials and light weight: carbon and modern fibres reduce the weight in your hand while keeping excellent responsiveness, as with the ultra-light FLECK lunge whip or the WHIP & GO “Carbone” lunge whip. Synthetic shafts, like the WHIP & GO solid polyamide lunge whip, are very durable.
- Handle ergonomics: a well-made grip stays firm even with gloves or in wet weather. Quality finishes, such as the WHIP & GO lunge whip with leather handle, feel pleasant in the hand and hold securely.
- Attachment and lash: a neat join between the shaft and the lash prevents accidental knots during wide movements, whether you choose the WHIP & GO “Tourillon” lunge whip or the FLECK lunge whip with silicone lash.
