What is the role of a driving whip?
In carriage driving, the driver has no direct contact through the legs or body weight to influence the horse. Driving relies on the voice, the reins and the whip. This tool extends the action of the hand discreetly, to channel impulsion, mobilise the hips or ask a hind leg to engage more. It is never a tool for punishment, but an aid for contact, measured dosage and guidance.
Thanks to the flexibility of its shaft and the precision of its lash, the whip lets you touch the horse in harness exactly where you intend without disturbing the reins. The calm way it is used keeps the gait honest and the turnout settled, whether in a dressage arena or on a drive out in the country.
What should you look for when choosing a driving whip?
The right choice depends on the distance between the driver and the horses, the type of turnout and the comfort you want over long sessions. Several points will guide your decision:
- Reach: The overall length should let you reach the horse's shoulder or croup without forcing the driver to lean out of position on the seat.
- Balance: Weight placed well towards the handle avoids tiring the arm and keeps the hand steady on the reins.
- Lightness: A light, responsive shaft gives clear signals without putting undue strain on the driver's wrist.
- Size when stored: Ease of transport and storage between the yard, the vehicle and the tack room is a practical point day to day.
Why choose a telescopic or ultra-light model?
In the field and in training, handling and transporting equipment calls for practical gear. A telescopic whip shortens to fit in a boot or a bag, then returns to its full working length as soon as it is extended.
In our selection, the FLECK ultra-light driving whip offers excellent handling over long working sessions. For a mix of compactness and stability, we offer the Fleck telescopic driving whip and the WHIP & GO "Carbone" telescopic driving whip. For regular work, the WHIP & GO "Carbone" driving whip and the WHIP & GO driving and training whip meet everyday demands well.
