Why ride with a bareback pad?
Riding bareback helps you perfect your vertical balance, feel the movement of the back precisely and refine your aids without a rigid tree in between. However, the direct contact of your seat bones can become uncomfortable for the horse's back over time.
A suitable bareback pad offers several key benefits for your rides:
- Cushioning and protection: the padded layer spreads pressure points from your seat while protecting the coat and skin from repeated rubbing.
- Grip and stability: non-slip surfaces or suede-style materials limit slipping and help you keep a balanced position.
- Freedom of movement: with no tree, the shoulders and withers have complete freedom of movement during transitions and work in all three gaits.
- Thermal comfort: breathable or soft linings prevent excessive sweat build-up in direct contact with the coat.
How do you choose the right bareback pad for the way you ride?
Every horse and rider has different needs depending on conformation and the feel they are after. Several criteria can guide your choice among the models available:
- Level of grip: some riders prefer a very grippy material for a secure seat, while others want a more neutral, classic feel.
- Thickness and softness: denser padding insulates the spine more, while a thinner pad gives a more immediate feel of the horse's movement.
- Anatomical shape: a well-cut wither channel avoids pressure on the withers and respects the natural curve of the horse's back.
- Girthing system: the position and compatibility of the girth attachments keep the pad stable on the back without getting in the way of the girth.
